When the scarlet cardinal tells
Her dream to the dragonfly,
And the lazy breeze makes a nest in the trees,
And murmurs a lullaby,
It's July.

When the tangled cobweb pulls
The cornflower's cap awry,
And the lilies tall lean over the wall
To bow to the butterfly,
It's July.

When the heat like a mist veil floats,
And poppies flame in the rye,
And the silver note in the streamlet's throat
Has softened almost to a sigh,
It's July.

When the hours are so still that time
Forgets them, and lets them lie
Underneath petals pink till the night stars wink
At the sunset in the sky,
It's July.

Think back on some of your favorite books and describe one that has influenced you in some way. When did you read the book, what was it about, and how did it impact your life?

Answers

Answer:

Out Of My Mind

Explanation:

One of my favorite books is Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper. I can't date back to when I read it but I'd say it was maybe two years ago? Not sure. I'd reread it every day.

*Warning: Spoilers!*

This story is told through 11-year-old Melody. She has cerebral palsy, and this resulted in her inability to speak or walk. She does have an extraordinary photographic memory. She's very intelligent and can understand everything very well. However, this is something that many people around Melody cannot seem to grasp. They make it seem as if she has the inability to think or as if she's incapable of learning. She becomes frustrated with this because it feels as if people who don't even know her well just assume she doesn't understand anything, this is including her peers and unfortunately adults as well. She navigates through the rest of the story and goes through ups and downs.

I've become better at recognizing when an author has good writing and characters or not, so if you read reviews of this book, many of the negative ones are just about the writing. I can understand that. At the time, I began reading this book and automatically got hooked because of the concept and being able to understand how Melody felt. It was the first time I really thought about people with disabilities and imagined how frustrating it must be to be constantly underestimated and misunderstood. When Melody felt angry, I was angry. When she felt happy, I felt happy. When she was disappointed, I was disappointed. If there's something that I did see 1-3 star reviews say is that it really does shine a light on how people that are disabled feel. It gives them a voice. Even if the writing isn't too complex or unique to some people and they found the characters one-dimensional, I think that everyone needs to read this book at least once. Especially those who have mindsets similar to the antagonists in the story (I'm looking at you, Claire). Overall, the story was eye-opening to me, it gave me a bigger heart, and encourages me to be emotionally aware of all people.

Read the excerpt from the article Skara Brae:

The people of Skara Brae then farmed the surrounding lands, with evidence suggesting that they grew barley and other grains. They kept cows and pigs, and they fished in the ocean for a good part of their diet.

As the number of people grew, the village expanded. Covered tunnels and alleyways were built to connect all the homes. This would have protected people traveling from one house to another from cold winter weather. Because of the connections between the houses and the shared workspace, archaeologists believe that Skara Brae was a close-knit community.

Which of the following correctly paraphrases the excerpt?

Because the community of Skara Brae wanted to be closer, they built tunnels between their houses in order to move their cattle more easily.

The number of people living in Skara Brae increased because the tunnels they built between houses meant they never had to go outside.

The cows and pigs that the people of Skara Brae kept helped them build tunnels between houses. They did this because they were a close-knit community.

As the close-knit community of Skara Brae grew, the farmers and fishermen built tunnels to connect their homes. This allowed them to visit without venturing out into the cold.

The following accurately paraphrases the excerpt: Skara Brae's residents dug tunnels connecting their homes so that their cattle could be moved more readily. Thus, choice (A) is the best one.

What do you know about Skara Brae?

On the west coast of Mainland, the main island in the Scottish archipelago of Orkney, is the Neolithic stone-built town of Skara Brae . consisting of 10 grouped flagstone cottages with stone hearths, beds, and cabinets, set in earthen dams that supported the walls. Each home has a "toilet" and a drain as part of a primitive sewer system. Using water, waste is flushed into a drain and into the ocean

The most complete Neolithic settlement in Europe was built there between approximately 3180 and 2500 BC. One of four sites that make up "The Heart of Neolithic Orkney," Skara Brae was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

I don’t think it should have been solved differently. He could have gone to a teacher and asked for help, but the teachers didn’t take him seriously and probably wouldn’t have listened. He could have tried to reason with them, but do you honestly think “rock throwing bullies” have any reason? No. This was the best option for him. It allowed him to break free from his leg braces and find something that he could do well.

Running was his salvation throughout the whole movie as well, so if this was solved differently, there wouldn’t really be a movie.
